Summary/Abstract: Already in the 19th century the liturgical movement, first in the West (France, Belgium, Ger- many) and later in other countries, had a great influence on the m ore conscious and active participation of the faithful in the liturgy of the Holy Mass. A significant role on this process played the small missals containing the translations of the Ordo Missae texts. Subsequently, the Popes Pius X, Pius XI, and later Pius XII, in the documents directed to the entire Church, provided theological justification of the active participation in the liturgy of the Eucharist (baptismal priesthood). Firstly it should be the interior participation (offering onself through the priest’s hands) and then the external participation, mainly through the Gregorian chant and gestures. Different degrees of the participatio actuosa in the various forms of the celebration of the Mass were defined by the Congregation of Rites in its instruction De musica sacra et liturgia. However, it was the Constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium of the Second Vati- can Council which stated that the very nature of the liturgy requires the actuosa participatio of the faithful and the Church “ earnestly desires that all the faithful should be led to that full, conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations” (SC 14). The author presents the development of the understanding of the actuosa participatio in the litugy. The presentation is based on the analysis of the Church documents from Pius X to Pius XII.
