Summary/Abstract: This article is an attempt to provide a historical overview of the lay ministry in the Eucha- ristic liturgy, with particular emphasis on the function of an acolyte. Ancient ministries in the liturgical community and in the daily life of Christians became degrees of “lower ordi- nation” in later centuries, directed at “higher ordination”. The reform of the Second Vatican Council organized these ranks and ministries in the community of the Church, emphasizing the role of the acolyte and extraordinary minister of Holy Communion. Pope Francis in January 2021 opened a new perspective, introducing the possibility of the ministry of an acolyte at the altar and in the community of the Church for women.
