Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the processes of identity constructions in late antique and early medieval Illyricum. The most significant conclusion is that there were two separate processes. The first is the process of acculturation, the indigenous population "becoming Slavs", following the "Slav migrations" of the 6th and 7th century. The second process occurs in the 9th century, after the disintegration of the Anvar qaganate, the foundation of the Byzantine thema Dalmatia and the establishment of the Carolingian empire. The changed political cicumstances initiated a formation of more complex political institutions and new identities, such asthe Croats, developed in post-Roman Illyricum.
