Summary/Abstract: The author of this study intends to refer to one of the major intellectual formative stages that Gheorghe Şincai undertook during his studying in Rome (1774–1779). The article stresses the role of the intellectual milieu, the Romanian encountered there at the end of the 18th century. It highlights the personal acquaintances he made there, their role in directing his further readings and especially the option for a particular ideological conviction that marked his becoming (in progress at that particular time) as a representative of the Aufklärung. The article approaches critically the main source Elegia, traditionally regarded in Romanian historiography as a fundamental source in the reconstitution of Şincai’s intellectual development. Without having been singular in Şincai’s biography, the Roman experience is important especially for the impact it had on the Romanian intellectual, and also for the opening of his future inquisitive searchings.
