Summary/Abstract: The article proposes a comparative study of the metaphors of natural phenomena referring to the European crisis of recent years. Following anonomasiological approach, the two levels of manifestation of the metaphor are observed: conceptual level, to identify the correspondences between the two constitutive domains of the metaphor, and linguistic level, to follow the use of metaphors in speech. The correspondences between the economic crisis and two large types of natural phenomena, atmospheric disturbances and telluric or marine movements, lead to the juxtaposition of the two conceptual domains of the metaphor and to the construction of the conceptual metaphor CRISIS ARE NATURALPHENOMENA; it is linguistically materialized in metaphors such as tempesta orbufera finanziaria/economica, uragano economico, terremoto o tsunamifinanziario/economico, in Italian, and furtună economică, uragan economic, cutremur or tsunami economic/financiar, in Romanian. Journalists exploit the catastrophic dimension of natural phenomena to give an idea of the great disastersthat crises can cause.
