Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the analysis of authentic data collected in Romania during walk-in conversations. The conversations represent "small talk". It is about the contribution of dogs to communication and the establishment of contacts between unknown communication participants. The study shows that dogs help their owners to get in touch with strangers, facilitate communication between strangers and build trust between the interlocutors. Dogs are not only regarded as pets, but as family members and are treated and addressed like children.
