Local and Direction Prepositions in German and Romanian. Didactic Considerations on Commonalities and Language-Specific Differences

Summary/Abstract: German prepositions expressing a position and a direction are entered in foreign language teaching already at level A1 for they describe positions or directions that occur in everyday life quite often. If one compares sentences in German and Romanian, one can find that German prepositions such as AN, BEI, IN, AUF very often correspond to the Romanian preposition LA. Therefore, the prepositions present difficulties for those who learn German as a foreign language, because of their importance, which can be flexible. In German, for example, IN is mostly used for the situation in a closed room such as in dem Saal / în sală and in der Flasche / în sticlă. Difficulties can arise in situations when the preposition AN has no accurate translation into Romanian as in the following examples, where the nouns do not represent closed spaces: Er lag in dem Bett. / El stătea în pat. The article proposes solutions for learners with Romanian as their mother tongue to choose the right preposition, using the terms space and surface.
