Summary/Abstract: This paper follows, from several different angles, decades of reflection on ritual and magic in anthropology. The work begins with a discussion of the extremely fruitful work of anthropologist Victor Turner, who founded the anthropological study of rituals in the twentieth century. Turner introduced the scheme of the ‘rite of passage’ of ethnologist Arnold Van Genep into broader anthropological thought, and through collaboration with playwright Richard Scheckner, who pushed the boundaries of many disciplines, he constructed a wide field of performance studies. The second part of the paper, in order to present newer trends and reflections on rituals, will point out the ‘difficulties’ in anthropological practice of magic as something that constantly escapes rational / scientific explanation, but also as something that is one of the essential issues important for the discipline.
