Summary/Abstract: In a pioneering paper presented in 1934, French sociologist Marcel Mauss (1973) introduced culturally codified techniques of the body (techniques du corps) to sociologists and anthropologists. Mauss pointed out that, although the body is a basic biological category, people use it according to habits and customs of their own societies. Since Mauss’ groundbreaking research, the body became cultural as well as biological fact and the role of the body in human action, symbolism and politics has been of long-interest in anthropology and other social sciences.
