Summary/Abstract: The article presents functioning of penitentiary departments in prison, their dangerous side, problems and edification. The Penitentiary Departments have undergone many changes of their formal and structural side, that have influence on today’s work of Penitentiary departments. The paper analyzes legal regulations as well as their practical functioning in the perspective of Prison Service officers serving in residential wards.
