Was Socrates a Hedonist?

Summary/Abstract: The article is focused on the problem of the venue of pleasure in human’s life and the teaching of Socrates. This problem has two possible decisions – in the spirit of asceticism and in the spirit of hedonism. There are notable arguments in favor of the second option based on the analysis of Socrates critics of sensuous pleasure, on Socrates’ philosophic discourse and his attitude to death. All this lead us to the conclusion that Socrates’ teaching is compatible with the principle of pleasure and Socrates may be treated as an original hedonist.
