Summary/Abstract: One of the most memorable foreign policy moves in the late Kádár era was the establishment of diplomatic relations between Hungary and South Korea in February 1989. In the period of Cold War, Hungarian foreign policy recognized as the only legitimate representative of the Korean people the Korean People’s Democratic Republic, which ruled the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, and, in accordance with the other countries belonging to the Soviet block, maintained no diplomatic relations with its official enemy, the Republic of Korea. This Hungarian move meant without any doubt a breach of the Cold War alliance structure, and the Pyongyang regime accordingly reacted to it nervously. The present paper presents the process of the establishment of the official relations, based on archival sources and the recollections of the participants.
