Summary/Abstract: In this article the author defines the two basic terms in the sociology of religion, the term church and the term clergy, in an encyclopedic way. Church is primarily defined as one of the aspects of the ideal type of religous organization, next to cult, sect and denomination. Clergy is defined as a professional, hierarchical group of ritual experts who have the special knowledge of the techniques of serving the God and the organization of the religious life of the congregation.
