Summary/Abstract: Starting from an understanding of schools and universities as spaces for the formation and practice of democratic citizenship, this article proposes a series of theoretical reflections, with the aim of approximating the cardinal values that education systems should associate with civic competences. We will discuss the autonomy-responsibility-solidarity triad and we will approach moral autonomy in terms of the individual's ability to be an agent, to initiate projects, ideas, and relationships, to be in control of their own life narrative. To provide an example of a “pedagogy of civics”, the article will present the concept of Bildung, through its four dimensions: transferable knowledge and meanings, non-transferable knowledge, and meanings, expanding the sense of responsibility and civic engagement.
