Summary/Abstract: Modern culture in Europe has started with man’s rebellion against God and with the “emancipation” of the totality of human life from any religious content and authority. God or freedom became a dilemma and a choice. That had a consequence: conflict between Church and state (society), worldly and sacral, spiritual and material, soul and body, faith and reason. Faith has become a symbol of irrational, ignorance, darkness, unprovable, conservativeness etc. Reason, though, has become a symbol of power, knowledge, prosperity and progress. In a few last centuries nothing was so much glorified as rational understanding. With Dositej Obradovich started some kind of “Europeanization” of modern Serbia and the acceptance of Western Europe educational and cultural models of existence. In his writings faith and knowledge are complementary terms. His dilemma wasn’t either-or, but both faith and knowledge even though he himself had very often glorified reason…
