Summary/Abstract: Islamic religious education was introduced in primary and secondary schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the final stages of the decline of communist ideology in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. This effort was facilitated by the conscious attitude of farsighted individuals within the Islamic Community. At the time, there were more skeptics than vocal advocates for making Islamic religious education mandatory in all schools in the country. Those who did not believe that religious education should be introduced in schools argued that it would lead to the decline of traditional religious schools known as mektebs. Critics from the public argued that it would impose an additional burden on students. The response was grounded in a clear assertion that schools would provide theoretical knowledge about religion, while practical knowledge would still be gained in mektebs. It took a lot of strength, wisdom, and struggle to achieve what we have today. Currently, Islamic religious education is implemented according to curricula developed and adopted by the highest authorities of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and approved by relevant state and entity ministries.
