Summary/Abstract: In this article the author analyses the role and importance of the religion in the formation and affirmation of the national identity of Serbs in the Republic of Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is emphasized that religion represents one of the key elements of the Serb national identity, but that, because of the special historical and social circumstances, her role in the affirmation of the identity of Serbs in RS and B&H is even greater than it is in the case of the Serbs in other regions. Mass conversion of the Orthodox population to Islam, which happened after the Ottman conquests, and the ethnic mixture that, as a result of those conversions, has had shaped Bosnian-Herzegovinian society for centuries, have had created specific social, political and cultural conditions because of which the religion has became the key element of national identities of all the local communities, including the Serb people.
