Summary/Abstract: A fundamental starting point in this paper is the fact that there is no democracy without respect for human rights. These are terms everyone refers to, from politicians, nongovernmental organizations to common people. However, a question is raised: “Who is teaching young people about democracy, human rights and being a responsible citizen?” Therefore, the problem of upbringing and education for living in a democratic society will be emphasized in this paper. There is no democratic society without developed democratic competences of all members of the community, especially of children and young people, and therefore democratic culture is learned behavior. Bearing in mind the necessity of socialization of the young for living in a democratic society, three agents of socialization will be emphasized: family, school and mass media. Based on in-depth interviews with seniors of one of the gymnasia in Nis, we will attempt to draw conclusions on promotion of democratic atmosphere and respect for human rights by family, school and media in everyday life.
