Summary/Abstract: Remote learning has had over 200 years of history during which the definition of remote learning has changed. Technological development resulted in the emergence of new didactic tools and aids as well as teaching methods used in this form of teaching. The unexpected proliferation of remote education on a global scale in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic meant that it can be considered a specific critical event in education. It has brought about major changes in the teaching-learning strategy for both students and teachers. The aim of the article is to characterize the changes that took place in remote education in the years 1900-2022, including, first of all, the evolution of definitions, methods and didactic means. The article is the result of studying literature upon remote learning, also in the context of teaching Geography. A literature review revealed a gap in research studies on remote education. New circumstances in the school reality resulting from the pandemic and technological progress have exposed and strengthened the need to urgently fill the indicated gap.
