Summary/Abstract: The paper is dedicated to identifying one of the problems of church music in the Serbian Orthodox Church in the territory of Austro-Hungary in the period from the XVIII to the XIX century. Church chanting was transmitted orally until the appearance of Kornelije Stankovic and his attempts to record Serbian folk chant with the help of Western European notation. The question arises as to how many different factors influenced the Western European way of thinking to take root in Orthodox Serbian church music.
