Summary/Abstract: In the postmodern, postsecular world in which religion is reemerging as an important socio-political factor, accusations of blasphemy make a very public reappearance as a weapon in the symbolic struggles of identity-based groups. This paper will therefore strive to offer a general theoretical-historical introduction into the issue of accusations of sacrilege, blasphemy, or desecration. A definition of the terms will be followed by a historical overview of approaches to blasphemy in traditional Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, after which the development of the issue in the postsecular world will be briefly reviewed. This will be followed by an assessment of the functions that blasphemy accusations can fulfill in a society, and especially how their study can be approached in the context of 21st century Serbia.
