Summary/Abstract: In the interpretation of a folklore text, the context of manifestation determines the identification of the functions that it acquires. In any case, the context and the interpreted text, whether it is a prayer, a song, a dance shout, etc., are in a strong interconnected relationship through which an entire folklore is presented. It is built, on the one hand, by the repertoire and the interpretive moment, and, on the other hand, by the performer. The texts related to the Christmas and New Year period, interpreted by us, represent only apart of this whole, if we think about the folklore repertoire of Starchiojd from Prahova County, an area researched by us from an insider’s perspective (as a village son), as well as from an outsider’s one (as a researcher). The main purpose of this study was to identify and interpret the texts (specific to the period mentioned) and to "place" the interpretive style and local variants among those found throughout the country. This led to the conclusion that variability is one of the common folk features used by each performer to give a text local or zonal specificity (the performer usually takes certain motives that "match" the repertoire and the specifics of the area). At the same time, by analysing the variants of sentences, for example, we identified the evolution of the topics approached by interpreters to make known or "rebuke" a social and historical situation, as evidenced by certain old and lazy girls, but also political issues. Placed in a context so common and familiar to the rural community (carolling in all households of the village), these aspects become accessible to all and offered directly by those who own, interpret and transmit this specialized repertoire - carollers.
