Summary/Abstract: The article examines the unusual iconography of the Christ Child, represented with a diaphanous garment, in an icon of the Virgin Mary with the epithet Mistress of Life, originating from Nessebar. The image is juxtaposed with other examples from the Byzantine area and also with examples from Western European pre-Renaissance art, mainly from Italy. Possible directions marking the emergence, development and transformations of this iconographic solution are outlined, as well as the processes of influence between art in Western Europe and Byzantium.
