Summary/Abstract: The article traces the veneration of St. Philothea and the metamorphoses it underwent, especially with the translatio of her relics from Tarnovo to Wallachia. The cult was originally complex in nature and combined features of a pious matron,a reverend and a defender of the faith. In fact, it became widespread after the relics of the saint were transferred to the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Their procession later to Vidin and then to Wallachia led to a change of veneration and we find St. Philothea as a martyr for the faith, who suffered at the hand of her father. In addition to the narrative textual evidence of hagiology, some of the extant images of the saint are traced and incorrect identifications made in earlier studies have been clarified.
