Summary/Abstract: In this paper I am arguing that in order to determine the goals and functions of educational institutions we first have to clarify the concept of education itself. With regard to the educational theories of Dewey and Hegel I claim that education should be understood as a process of permanent conceptual and argumentative transformation of individual’s beliefs, ideals and volitions. This is in the same time a process, at which the development and realization of individual freedom takes place. Carrying out of that process is the main intrinsic goal of educational institutions. I argue that educational institutions can fulfill their extrinsic functions – such as preparation for the labor market, for democratic citizenship, for happiness, for social co-operation – only in the case, that they are focusing on their central goal to promote education.
