Summary/Abstract: The study analyzes the activity of Metropolitan Visarion Puiu, as the head of the Orthodox Mission in Transnistria, established on August 15, 1941. Metropolitan Visarion Puiu was installed on December 6, 1942 in the cathedral of Odessa. In his role as the leader of the Mission, Visarion Puiu took several reorganizational measures. The number of priests visibly increased, so that by the beginning of 1942, the Orthodox Mission included 285 clerics. Because missionary activities were carried out in churches, schools, and cultural centers, by the end of 1942, 84 cultural centers equipped with libraries had been established. Also during this period, a Theological Seminary was established in Dubăsari and the first issue of the magazine “Christian Transnistria” was published. The Metropolitan contributed to the development of the New Regulation and decrees-laws, took measures to support the Orthodox religion in the region and to combat atheist-communist ideas, and undertook various acts of charity. The study also describes the situation of the deportation of Jews to Transnistria during the Antonescu government.
