Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on the translatability of humour in audio-visual translation. Humour represents a difficulty for translators due to the differences between the source and the target cultures. Because everyone has their own perception on jokes and humour, different contexts can change the overall meaning. Therefore, in order to preserve the meaning from the source language some techniques are required. The paper analyses a series of puns from the subtitles of the series of American comedy films Police Academy. The aim of the research is to check whether the translation strategies used on the puns manage to deliver the full meaning of the pun or if the puns suffer structural changes in order to be understood in the target language (Romanian). The paper is based on the theories coined by Franz Josef Hausmann (1974) and Dirk Delabastita (1993).
