Summary/Abstract: The article describes tensions between Michał Głowiński, an areligious structuralist of Jewish background and the texts which he analysed, which are inevitably entangled in religious contexts. These texts include both literary works of Bolesław Leśmian and Cyprian Kamil Norwid and Pol- ish press reports from John Paul II’s visits to Poland. Głowiński analysed Leśmian’s ‘otherworld’ (zaświat) against religious conceptions, although negative theology, also known as apophatic theology, was not alien to him. Norwid’s parables, according to Głowiński, lose their parabolic intensity due to Christian religiosity. But when Głowiński, an outstanding specialist of Polish Newspeak, wrote about press reports from John Paul II’s visits to Poland, he turned out to be a spokesman for the arguments of John Paul II, if only because he showed the ways in which they were manipulated by Polish journalists. In fact, entangled in the texts sentenced to the religious context, he showed the efficiency of literary competence on all textual fields, also on the ones, which may appear to be alien to a areligious scholar.
