Summary/Abstract: The article describes the role and function of a Polish Sign Language interpreter and interpreting into sign language in English language classes for students. The presence of an interpreter in an English language course results from the adaptation of education to the individual communication needs of deaf students. The analysis of the lecturer’s and students’ statements made it possible to see the roles and functions of the interpreter during classes from the perspective of the teacher and the person being taught. The analyzed statements of participants of foreign language classes enabled the authors of the article to indicate the difference between the role of the interpreter in foreign language classes and translation understood as the transfer of content in a language understandable to the recipient. The conclusions from the analyzed material show how closely the roles of a sign language interpreter and a cultural assistant, who is a support not only for the student, but often also for the lecturer, are correlated.
