Summary/Abstract: Toxic substances have many uses, but none is as controversial as using them to commit murder. Without a doubt, it was a method willingly used in every epoch. The development of science has made it possible to detect the presence of poisons in the body, although, as practice shows, the results of toxicological tests are not always true. The article deals with the issue of toxic substances used for intentional poisoning and the importance of toxicological expertise for the judiciary. The purpose of this study is to discuss the most commonly used toxic substances and the importance of toxicological expertise for the judiciary. In the first part of the study, the history of toxic substances used in murder was presented. The conceptual apparatus necessary to understand the content of the article was defined, including such concepts as toxic substance, poison, toxicology and forensic expertise. Information on the most commonly used poisons and their properties in the context of the development of toxicology is presented. The second part describes the basics of toxicological opinion and the use of toxicological forensic expertise, which is aimed at identifying causal relationships between the presence of a toxic agent and the reaction of the body. The last part of the study addresses the issue of the importance of forensic toxicological expertise for the administration of justice. The method of literature and existing data analysis was used.
