Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to describe the communal aspect of the former scientific (academic) discourse using the example of Polish herbals from the 16th and 17th centuries. The methodological basis of the work is primarily the assumptions of discourse linguistics. Three types of communities were distinguished: the community of scholars, the community of doctors (medics), and the ethnic community, and then their linguistic and textual exponents were indicated. The described communities have an appropriate character: professional and specialized, practical and vocational, and cultural. The conducted analyses led to the conclusion about an important communal aspect of the former scientific discourse, drawing from foreign foundations but also containing native elements.
