Summary/Abstract: The paper first looks at the internal configuration of the universal speech act of apologizing and discusses some aspects concerning its culture specificity in the light of negative and positive politeness theories. The second part is a descriptive review of the Illocutionary Force Indicating Devices available in English and Romanian for the performance of an apology.
