The Construction poder + Infinitive in Medieval Galician Notarial Documents

Summary/Abstract: The main aim of the present paper is to analyse some peculiarities of modal uses of the structure poder + infinitive in medieval notarial documentation (13th-15th c.) from Galicia. By means of an analysis based on data extracted from the corpus Tesouro Medieval da Lingua Galega, the study investigates the influence of the legal character of the database on the distribution of the three basic modal values, i.e., the dynamic, deontic and epistemic ones and on the verb forms in which the structure in question is found.
