Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on causes for the extinction of the present in modern and postmodernrealities; about the institutional standardization of time, the forging of routine gestures,attempts to unify work rhythms, top-down management of time, and the shaping of itsexperience by individuals. The history of modern practices aimed at progress, haste, andprofit maximalization continues to impact social functioning. These practices translateinto modern problems with experiencing the present, which is sometimes treated as alink between what was and what will be, a building block of the future or an obstaclethat separates us from life, an obstacle that we should wait out. The author claims thatalthough reclaiming the present seems impossible, it is worth finding oneself in thehere-and-now. The disorientation and (dis)position of openness – related to the present– provide an opportunity to return to a greater directness, providing possible basis fordisagreement and expression of political demands.
