Summary/Abstract: This article, through the analysis of the situation of permanent and labor immigrantsin Taiwan, will try to show the different facets of Taiwanese foreignpolicy aimed at the Southeast Asian region. Announced by President Tsai Ingwen, the so-called New Southward Policy focuses on talent cultivation and industrial, commercial, cultural, educational and tourism exchanges. Its direct consequenceis the exponentially increasing number of ASEAN nationals on theisland, who come to Taiwan lured by the high standard of living and opportunitiesfor high wages. From the perspective of the Taiwanese government, a specialrole is played by the second generation of immigrants from Southeast Asia, whoare presented in popular discourse as the future of an island plagued by typicalproblems of developed countries such as low birth rates and gentrification.
