Summary/Abstract: This article examines the history and challenges of the nobility in 19th and 20th century Slovakia, a topic that has been neglected by the Marxist-dominated historiography until 1989. The authors argue that the nobility, despite losing its political and economic privileges, remained a significant social and cultural force in the region, adapting to the modernization processes and the changing state structures. The article presents various aspects of the nobility's role and activities, such as its participation in the state administration, its entrepreneurial and charitable endeavors, its everyday life and mentality, and its relations with the national movements. The article also discusses the methodological and theoretical approaches to the study of the nobility, drawing on the works of Pierre Bourdieu and other scholars. The article aims to contribute to the international dialogue on the history of the European nobility and to stimulate further research on this topic.
