Summary/Abstract: The subject of this paper is the study of the key features of the theater of the Portuguese actor, director and playwright Tiago Rodrigues (1977), one of the most prominent and innovative figures in the European theatrical landscape today. Against the threat of the disappearance of meaning in the contemporary world, Rodrigues stands for a theater which thrives on European literary and cultural heritage and makes of memory/remembrance an act of artistic resistance. In our paper, the playwright director embodies the concept of “writer-on-stage” (“écrivain de plateau“), a term that reflects the questioning in contemporary theater of conventional separation and hierarchy between dramatic text and performance, as well as the ever more important role that the stage plays in the creative process. His creations are fruits of collaboration with the actors, who always remain in the center of his work. Rodrigues’s dramaturgy is inscribed in the interstices of the old stories and myths, adding new details between their lines. That is also the case with the play Between the Lines, entangled with Sophocle’s Oedipus the King, which is the subject of a more detailed analysis in our paper. This mysterious and witty monodrama, in whose labyrinthine construction the frontiers between reality and fiction disappear, occupies a precious place in the author’s work, while its staging is a joint creation of Rodrigues and his long-term collaborator, the actor Tónan Quito. The play is written as a kind of an epistolary novel, enriched by the interpretation of the actor – who becomes, in this case, also an author, inviting each spectator to complete the text.
