Summary/Abstract: A democratic society is based on the existence of institutions, but it also requires the existence of specialists. The latter, in post-communist Romania, were recruited, at first from among former party education teachers or from related fields. Then, students educated in the relevant faculties entered the scene. In this article, we have chosen to discuss political science from the perspective of today's students, who will become tomorrow's political science professionals. The reasons why they choose the field, how they represent their field and its specificities, how their motivation can be sustained during their study programme have been the elements of interest in our approach. The observations and conclusions are based on the answers given by first year Political Science students in Sibiu during the last three academic years. The interaction with the students also gave us the opportunity to reflect on how we could support students' motivation during their studies, but also on the introduction of Political Science as a subject in the curriculum in high schools in Romania.
