Whose perspective? Media discourse on Israel and Palestine

Summary/Abstract: Numerous studies argued that the portrayal of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (IPC) is often biased and unbalanced. As one of the most widely covered international issues, the IPC attracts the attention of media researchers around the world. However, it also represents a story from a distant context that is difficult to cover in a balanced way, requiring an in-depth analysis of the context and one's own information environment. In this paper I attempt to meet this need. Drawing on Edward Said's theory of Orientalism, I try to summarise the methods and theoretical frameworks available for examining the bias and balance of IPC-related stories. As such, however, they could be used to analyse any other similar issue as it aims to provide more universal guidelines for reporting on issues that are socially, economically and culturally distant from “us”.
