Summary/Abstract: This paper discusses the consumption expenditure of households as an indirect indicator of living situation of the country’s inhabitants. The horizon being researched is the period from 1996 to 2009 that reflects all phases of development of the Czech economy including dynamic growth and dramatic decline. The main source of information on the amount of release and consumption pattern of households is the Household Budget Survey. Additionally, the statistics of retail sales, estimates of expenditure of Czech tourists and Czech workers in foreign countries, estimates of cross-border trade, consumption expenditures of entrepreneurs and more are also used. The classification of consumption expenditures is carried out by the COICOP international standard, its national variant CZ-COICOP, respectively. The paper presents the resultant effects of economic development and the development trends themselves on the structure and value of consumption expenditure of households in each year. The outputs are intended to serve as an indicator of development and analytical decision-making base, usable by subjects in the administration, management and enterpreneurial sectors. It can also be a possible procedural template for analyses of other periods.
