The future of human freedoms in the context of the development of new technologies and artificial intelligence in the vision of George F. McLean

Summary/Abstract: In the present context of globalization and new expectations regarding knowledge (through AI as well), the dignity of the person, human rights, especially the rights of minorities and women, George F. McLean shows a special concern for redefining the person in terms that avoid superficial, ideological or dogmatic formulations and combat technological and digital trends that have a negative impact on the human spirit and social relations. Wanting to be part of the solution, McLean proposes in one of his last works his concept of the human person redefined according to Aristotelian-Thomist principles and structured on four dimensions: (1) substance, (2) existence, (3) reason and (4) human subjectivity. Through this approach he argues that despite biological similarities, each person must be considered in relation to Absolute existence as an individual and unique substance, aware of his human rights and with rational abilities to understand and develop the values and virtues that form culture, define religion and bring true satisfaction in life. In this paper we will show how McLean redefines the person in terms of substance, existence, rationality and subjectivism to emphasize that the immanence-transcendence relationship in which every human being is suspended necessarily directs attention to an effective causality, external to the person’s existence, but which does not abstract the materiality. We will also consider some of the implications that new technologies and artificial intelligence have on human freedoms and values.
