Summary/Abstract: "The voicing contrast is arguably one of the most important linguistic features of human languages. This article demonstrates how Polish adults with no knowledge of the Chinese language perceive and produce syllable-initial stop consonants in this language. Theexperimental study revealed that aspirated consonants in Chinese are easily recognized as voiceless and generally accurately produced (imitated), whereas their phonologically voiced counterparts may be challenging for learners both in perception and production.Consequently, articulatory and perceptual exercises in Chinese language classes should not only focus on aspects of pronunciation commonly regarded as more difficult but also include seemingly easier sounds /p b t d k g/. A lesson plan outline dedicated to the topic of voicing in Chinese is given at the end of the article."
