Digital Materials in Learning Less Commonly Taught Languages − a Swedish Sample

Summary/Abstract: Swedish is a less commonly taught language, which entails a lack of qualified teachers of the language and a lack of a diverse range of learning materials adapted to different groups of students. Recently, there has been a significant increase in interest in learning Swedish, with the result that traditional textbooks are unable to meet students’ learning needs. However, there are many digital materials available, both dedicated to language learning and potentially useful for this purpose. These materials can be broadly categorized into two groups: materials written in the so-called ‘easy language’, (Sw. lättlästa texter), and those directly or indirectly intended for Swedish language teaching: digital textbooks, computer applications, as well as radio and television programmes that support Swedish language learning.
