Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to cover the establishment of protection for valuable historical collections in the context of the First Czechoslovak Land Reform. An example of Large Estate Křivoklát (Fürstenberg family papers) and Large Estate Mikulov (book collections of Dietrichstein family) were selected. In both cases, there were losses on valuable papers and books. Institutions that were supposed to supervise the execution of the land reform as for the cultural heritage did not have a sufficient number of trained employees to prevent such an outcome. A comprehensive understanding of the complexity of both historical and institutional development of Large Estate Archives brings up new research questions and interpretations since many of valuable documents deposited in the Large Estate Archives could have been lost, knowingly misplaced, or both.
