THE STATE AND PERSPECTIVES OF DIGITAL ARCHIVES IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

Summary/Abstract: The paper brings a brief history of the development in theoretical and practical attempts to deal with issue of archiving digital documents in the Czech Republic in the field of public archives and libraries. It describes the current state of the issue and sums up essential challenges that have to be dealt with. Currently, there is a central specialised workplace National Digital Archives, operating within the National Archives, that provides digital archiving to all public archives in the Czech Republic. The digital archiving in the Czech Republic today is tied up to electronic systems of public administration and electronic administrative files and partially omits the larger context of digital archiving. A basic conception of digital archiving ought to be worked out in order to combine the current state and tasks of digital archiving with international experience on long-term storage of digital documents.
