Agricultural insurance and farmers’ insurance awareness

Summary/Abstract: The authors have made an attempt at assessing farmers’ insurance awareness and their attitude to both compulsory and voluntary insurance. To this end they designed and conducted a question- naire survey among farmers in Szczytno Poviat in Warmińsko-Mazurskie Province.The first part of the article presents the main determinants of risk and loss in agriculture as well as the role of insurance in risk management in agricultural activity. In addition, development of agricultural insurance in Poland has been presented, as exemplified by TPL insurance of farm- ers and insurance of buildings which make up the agricultural farm. The second part of the article presents the objectives and design of the farmers’ questionnaire survey, whose scope includes the method of data collection, definition of survey units, selection method and sample size, as well as the construction of the questionnaire. The final part presents the results of the survey and conclusions on the significance of agricultural insurance in Poland, farmers’ insurance awareness and their attitude to the insurance products they are offered.
