Summary/Abstract: Trust can be regarded as a very important factor determining active use of financial services, and, in particular, insurance products. In Poland, since the very beginning of the political transformation the reliability of financial institutions was naturally on the rise, reaching the highest level in 2007, which was proved by the subsequent Social Diagnoses. It was not until the economic and financial crisis of 2008 that a decrease in trust in financial institutions was visible. In this context, expecting answers about the level of trust in insurers seems fully justified. Currently, there is a particular oppor- tunity to present the pre- and post-crisis trust level, as it is possible to determine the trend in a much longer period. In 2013, the proportion of positive answers to the question: Do you trust life insurance companies? was 47 percent. On the other hand, the proportion of positive answers to the question: Do you trust non-life insurance companies? was similar, i.e. 45 percent, among those who expressed any opinion. It can be said that insurance companies – as is the case for other financial institutions – are finding it hard to regain the level of trust achieved as early as in 2007. What is equally interesting is the specific attempt at confronting the trust in financial institutions to the low level of social trust in state institutions from which, during the crisis, citizens expect bigger activity, relevant interventions and regulations to ensure consumer protection on the insurance market.
