Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the issues connected with defining illnesses in insurance against serious illness. The definition of a given disease in general terms and conditions of insurance influences whether an illness diagnosed in the insured person will be the basis for a claim to the insurance company to pay the benefit. For this reason, it is important that the terminology adopted by the insurance company is clear for the potential insured person, understandable, and, first and fore- most, compliant with the current medical knowledge. The author has conducted a two-way com- parative analysis of the definitions of the diseases included in the general terms and conditions of insurance against serious illness in order to determine, first of all, comparability of the terminology used by individual insurance companies, and, secondly, to confront insurers’ definition practice with the current medical knowledge. The article has been prepared on the basis of the author’s BA paper, which was awarded in the 13th edition of the competition for the best PhD, MA, BA and post-graduate paper in the field of commer- cial and social insurance. The Insurance Ombudsman is the competition’s organiser.
