Summary/Abstract: The paper presents solutions available on insurance markets of selected countries of the world in the con- text of specifying the definition of illnesses used in critical illness covers. The author assessed the meas- ures taken in the United Kingdom, Singapore and South Africa with the aim of introducing standardised terms and conditions of insurance. The selection of the analysed countries was not random. South Africa is the country where critical illness cover came into being. Singapore is the first country in the world that started to standardise the definition of illnesses and the United Kingdom has the biggest market for critical illness covers measured by a written premium. The paper discusses not only the reasons for introducing standardised terms and conditions of in- surance but also possible negative consequences this may bring about. The conclusions drawn were juxtaposed with Polish realities. In addition, solutions were proposed with potential for introduction in the future.
