Summary/Abstract: The author creates a special methodology for the investigation of the innovative urban culture. Roots of the Bulgarian masquerade plays are deep in the pre-Christian patriarchal civilisation. Christianity preserves patriarchal relations between men and women. Then a question comes to mind: How do we have to interpret female participation in male masquerade groups – as a “female in a female character” or as a “female in a male character”? There is a possible explanation according to which female emancipation (i.e. the fact that contemporary women are “men” and “women” at the same time) affects that specific development of the masquerade towards carnival. Thus, the feast is to be viewed as a specific human need. More than that: it has many faces with many reflections, sparkling in them.
